It’s an established fact. Global warming now threatens us and the whole human society. It is changing the global climate by raising up to higher than normal atmospheric temperatures. As a result, polar ice melt and swells sea levels. This mean undue flooding that could immerse islands in water on some parts. While the rising atmospheric temperature will cause widespread drought to once fertile land areas. And scientists realized it’s human doing and negligence, especially burning fossil fuels, that causes global warming. Unless we act quickly, we could be facing the worst man-made catastrophes in the whole history of our existence.
The good news is, we can prevent or prolong the ill effects of global warming through our concerted individual actions. We must always remember these three : Recycle, reuse and remove.
RECYCLE
1.) Empty bottles and Cans. Instead of disposing empty cans and bottles into the garbage, use your creativity to turn them into something useful around the house. For example, empty infant milk tin cans can be made into exciting piggy banks for each member of the family. Kids save their coins in the piggy bank and learn the value of money. At the same time, you save valuable landfill space. Empty bottles could be sold into the junk shops for extra money.
2.) Water. According to research, 97% of the world’s water is salty. The remaining 3% is freshwater and potable. But 2% of the total drinkable water remains in as solid ice. That leaves a measly 1% for us to drink. So conserve water. Don’t throw away rice washings when you cook food. Instead, use the rice washings to water your potted plants or flush the toilet. This will conserve water and ease up your water bill, too.
3.) Aluminum foil and tetra packs. Those juice drink tetra packs for your kids need not go to the garbage. Instead, you can clean them and then sew them into all-purpose bags for every day needs.
4.) Buy and use recycled products.
REUSE
1.) Don’t throw your old clothes, especially jeans. Accessories them with the latest fashion fads so you can wear them again like new.
2.) If you a landline phone, you could collect a tall stack of phone directories. Don’t dispose these into the garbage or burn them. Instead, turn them into creavite works of art. One enterprising mother makes beautiful rugs out of these phone directories.
3.) Don’t throw away your children’s toys just because they are broken. Have them repaired or repair them yourself so they could still be presentable. If your children no longer wants them, donate them to your less fortunate neighbors or to orphan houses.
4.) Reuse refrigerants from your air-conditioners equipments.
5.) As much as possible, don’t buy new products. Think of ways to reuse the old ones so you save money at the same time help the environment.
REMOVE
1.) Replace all regular light bulbs from your rooms into fluorescent lamps. Light bulbs emit more heat and contribute to global warming.
2.) Remove all plugged electrical equipments from the outlet when not in use.
3.) Check and remove defective equipments from your home and have them repaired. Also check for leaking faucets, leaking gas, plumbing lines
Other Ways You Can Help Prevent Global Warming
1.) Plant a tree. It will help cool your house during summer at the same time help your community remain environment-friendly.
2.) Repaint your homes using latex paints instead of oil –based paints.
3.) Walk, use a bike or carpool. Use your car sparingly. In this way you minimize smoke emissions.
4.) If ever you use a car, check the tires and make sure these are inflated properly, and its engine is well-maintained.
5.) Buy energy-efficient appliances.
6.) Avoid buying items with excessive or bulky packaging.
7.) Turn off lights when not in use.
8.) Own or using a computer. Don’t shut it down during coffee breaks and then restart it. Instead, switch it to standby mode. You will be using less energy this way.
9.) Choose local produce in the vegetable section of the grocery instead of buying exotic imported items which require more packaging, and therefore, result in more garbage.
10.) Use biodiesel products instead of pure fuel for your car.
HOW TO MAKE AN ELEGANT DOORMAT FROM OLD PHONE DIRECTORIES
1.) Cut each pages from the directory.
2.) Tightly roll the individual page so it would resemble a rolled cigarette. Secure the end with a glue to prevent it from unfolding. Allow it to dry thoroughly.
3.) When dry, roll again the “ rolled-cigarette appearance’ page into circle a circle so it would look now like a doughnut. Again, secure the end using a glue gun .
4.) Gather all these “ rolled doughnuts” and then arrange them on top of a 1’x1’ thick cardboard. Make your preferred arrangement. Then use glue gun to stick these rolled “doughnut –shaped” phone directory pages into the cardboard box.
5.) Using watercolor or any coloring medium of your choice, color each individual “ doughnut-shaped” circles.
6.) Afterwards, apply varnish to the whole project and let it dry.
7.) You now have a beautifully crafted, colored doormat ready for use.
